I'm just experimenting. I hate the word "blog" and am fascinated with how the net seems to nurture *everyone's* vanity.

Evil did me right by starting his own thread on the "what's a thief" question. But a few posts later in that Grammar nazi sprawl thread, QuietlyObserving says "If we are to be a society founded on the Rule of Law, it would be prudent to maintain a healthy respect for language and the meaning of words, lest we slip into a dictatorship of unelected Judges."

This gives me a painfully beautiful opportunity to start a sister thread to Evil's, and ask you all to sink your fangs, fingers, etc., into the basic question "How does a law rule without a human to interpret and/or execute it?"

That's my latest hasty attempt at a longstanding interest in the gov't-of-law-and-not-men notion that's very popular here in the US. I've also known a few linguists and flirted with other philosphies enough to be taken aback by anyone who has too much certainty about the meaning of a particular word or phrase.

Unless you're a minor with parents who don't want you seeing PG-13 movies (I know we have some sharp youth out there, just want to respect your folks), I suggest finding and playing fword.wav before you finish a reply here.

Again where are you getting your data.

I dont think anyone wants to be poor, i think they are either made that way, or forced to be that way. Some of course just live off the governments bounty, but thats a select few.

As for the government not doing anything for its people. It does plenty. Sure maybe not as much as it should, but with the war and all, sacrifices have to be made.

As for private companies, they arent any better, all they want to do is get more money, only a few of them actually have a concience.

Perhaps some private companies have a concience... as far as public companies are concearned and somthing which you regularly hear them say "we have to do what is best for our shareholders". Yea cm'om burn those poor starving refugees for fuel... "oh my but it's in the best interests of our shareholders". My question is, where do we draw the line against doing what is best for the shareholders??????? Enough is enough, i mean you know, were trying to have a civilisation here!

i lived for a year on the streets in san francisco

it isn't the governments job to keep anyone happy just healthy

When I am forced into paying them my hard earned dollars for 'taxes' then I believe it most certainly is their job. Otherwise, let me keep my money and I will provide for myself, be it in times of emergency or just general living.
And just to throw one into the mix here, did anyone happen to see the TV program last night called 2057? If so, what did you think? Far fetched dreams if you ask me, and the best part was the difference we will have between 'premium' health care and 'regular' health care... still seems to be all about the benjamins!

No i didnt see it.

Enlighten us.

And as for your source, danie. I say thats not good enough. For you to actually bost an overwhelming 90% statistic, would mean that you actually know it to be true. Tell me did you go around asking the homeless this exact question, using a mathematical formula that would make sure you were not biased in your approach and always picked a random sample. I think not. See, we all are always drawn to those that are most integuing, to those that are different. Meaning that you probably saw that which you wanted to see, a bunch of homeless people who were happy with what they had and didnt want anything better. Its a simple mistake which we all make.

90% is presumably an exaduration, but i think the spirit of his point is that allot of homeless people choose that lifestyle. Since Danilost say's he spent a year on the streets, perhaps he can enlighten us all as to why this is the case?

If i was to live on the streets it would be a result of getting sick of working my ass off to earn shit money and then spend most of it on rent!

Also welfare is constantly getting harder and harder to qualify for. I don't know about America but here in Australia, you have to jump through some serious hoops to get welfare now.

Anyone who is too smart to be called mentally dissabled but not smart enough to jump through the welfare hoops... tuff! they get squat here in Australia.

Here in America the government treats most of its people like children. I cant tell you how many court cases i have seen where people have faked to have an injury or pregnancy just because they couldnt get a job. Some of them actually injured themselves. No wonder our country is in debt

Yep, yep that kind of stuff happens here too... well we do have a saying down here, 'where America goes, Australia follows'. Thats not just talking about military campaigns either. everything!

Hmmm i think were kind of a defacto American state! you guys better add another star for us.

we can add you right along with mexico and canada

one of the people i meet lived on the street for medical reasons
the man was a writer on the show "life styles of the rich and famous"
he had a family that he took care of ie home food
but he was a vetiman vet and if he didn't sleep in a dorm style sitting he said "that he would go crazy and might hurt his family"
i don't know wether to call him homeless or not
on Jan 30, 2007
the reason i was there was becouse i choose to be there to start with in the end i almost became trapped

living off of others like that is a trap or what ever word you want to insert in there instead

on Jan 30, 2007

There was this funny part on Colbert Report a while ago. He was talking about how Mexico was recounting the votes right. And hes like "let me paraphrase it for you, All you need to know is that the president of Mexico is still... President Bush!!"
